Walking for Thailand 1998 – Walking to Ayutthaya

Monday 1st June, 1998. During coffee at 06.00 hrs, William met one of his Brothers waiting for a bus to Bangkok! We left at 07.00 hrs Walking on the Right Hand Side (RHS) hard shoulder on the busy Highway 1, facing the oncoming traffic. We left Highway 1 after 2 kms for Highway 32. The intersection was not designed for ‘Walkers’ and it was rather scary. Highway 32 was not so busy, but with few places for food. We arrived at Ayutthaya at 14.00 hrs and walked over the old bridge into town. We found the ‘Ayutthaya Guest House’ in an area of seven guest houses. We met some guests from New Zealand and Holland and then we got a very early night for peaceful sleeping.

It was 26 kms from Pratunam Pra-In to Ayutthya. The total kms we have now walked to date: Mr William – 1,261 kms & Me – 1,636 kms. We were every excited to be now in Ayutthya, which is the old Capital of Thailand and steeped in history with stunning Temples.

Tuesday 2nd June and Wednesday 3rd June, 1998. On Tuesday morning we visited the TAT office which was an old teak building & quite magnificent. We saw the elephants waiting for rides and passed on that idea as they were very smelly. I enjoyed some ‘farang food’ for a change. Tuesday evening it rained very hard for 3 hours. On Wednesday we got a tuk-tuk to the main Temple in the ruins and William met his Thai Tour Guide friend again that he had previously met in Chiang Mai, Bangkok and at the Sofitel in Hua Hin! We had a good walk around all the ruins which I found fascinating. The local people were not very friendly. It must be the “Tourism Effect’ as we had found in Phuket. Here are ‘Our 1998 Walk Experiences & Publicity’:
