The Northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, which literally means “region of snowy mountains,” has always attracted mountaineers from all over the world because of its famous mountainous trails. Mountaineers, both beginners and experts, trek to Himachal for this popular activity and to seek other adventures for that adrenaline fix.
Government-run Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports regularly organizes adventure activities, and these include not just mountaineering (with internationally famous instructors), but skiing, backpacking, trekking, rafting, kayaking, and paragliding as well. And with beginner to expert courses, just about anybody can experience these Himachal adventures. Also, for those seeking calming activities, they can opt for bird-watching and other nature-based activities in the state’s monasteries.
But the Himalach is more ideal for thrill-seekers. “The entire five-day trek is full of surprises. One has to pass through magnificent glaciers, trudge lofty mountains and cross gurgling snow-fed streams. But it’s strictly for professionals,” British trekker Chris Bowden has said of the trekking route Tirtjdan-Sainj in the district of Kullu.
